The Bill of Rights Comic: A First Glimpse

The Bill of Rights Comic: A First Glimpse

BY NIGEL GRAY

I’ve been working on something unusual — a full visual interpretation of the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act. Not a polite, government‑approved civics pamphlet, but a comic that confronts the real implications of these rights when applied to actual people, actual history, and actual state power.

Most New Zealanders have never read the Bill of Rights.
Even fewer have ever seen it illustrated.
And almost none have been asked to face the uncomfortable truths that sit beneath its calm legal wording.

This comic does exactly that.

It doesn’t sanitise.
It doesn’t soften.
It doesn’t avoid the hard parts.

Some panels will be confronting.
Some will be provocative.
Some will be emotionally difficult.

This may even challenge YOUR comfort zone.

Below is a partial preview of one panel — just a fragment.
Paid subscribers will see the full, uncropped image inside the paywalled section, along with an additional early‑release panel.

If you’d like full access, consider upgrading.

Closing Note

This comic is shaping into one of the most ambitious projects I’ve attempted. It will challenge assumptions, spark debate, and force readers to confront rights they’ve never truly examined. And I assure you, these two images are just a part of the “unpacking of truth”.

Thank you to everyone who supports this work — you’re the reason projects like this can exist.
