Dear OceanaGold Leadership Team,
PLEASE ANSWER NIGEL’S LETTER!
I am writing to you as a New Zealand citizen and independent investigator who has been examining the structure, ownership, and fiscal outcomes of gold extraction in New Zealand. Recent analysis has revealed a pattern that raises serious ethical, economic, and civic questions about how your company operates within our country.
New Zealand currently exports approximately $1.1 billion in gold each year. According to publicly available data, OceanaGold is responsible for the vast majority of this output. Yet New Zealand retains less than 1% of that value through royalties and, in several years, no corporate income tax has been paid by your organisation despite substantial production and profit.
This raises a direct and unavoidable question: Do you believe it is ethically acceptable for OceanaGold to extract hundreds of millions of dollars in gold from New Zealand soil while contributing so little to the nation whose resources you profit from?
New Zealanders carry the environmental burden, the land use impact, and the long-term resource depletion. OceanaGold and its offshore shareholders retain the profit, the export revenue, and the strategic value. This imbalance is stark, and it is now widely visible.
I am asking you to respond publicly and directly:
New Zealanders deserve clear answers. Your company profits from our land, our communities, and our natural resources. It is reasonable to expect accountability, transparency, and a commitment to fair contribution. This letter is going public. Your reputation is not only on the line; take no action and this marks the beginning of a fight for justice. I assure you that you will lose this one.
I look forward to your response.
Regards, Nigel Gray
