This is a good look into the things the Doctors are not taught about Immunity
The Missing Foundations of Immunity — And Why I’ve Filed a New OIA
By Nigel Gray — 18 May 2026
Most New Zealanders assume that when they go to a doctor or a hospital, the system is teaching clinicians the full picture of how the human body protects itself.
But it isn’t.
And that is why I have now lodged a new Official Information Act request asking Te Whatu Ora to confirm what training — if any — clinicians receive on:
Because if the training doesn’t exist, then clinicians cannot meet their legal obligations under:
And that has consequences for every New Zealander.
The Three Protective Systems — A Model the Public Understands, but the System Doesn’t Teach
Scientific literature describes three major layers of defence:
These layers are well‑documented in physiology and immunology research.
But they are not taught as an integrated model in NZ medical training.
But they are not taught as an integrated model in NZ medical training.
Instead, clinicians are taught a simplified “innate vs adaptive” framework that focuses almost entirely on the internal immune system.
The first two layers — the ones that handle the majority of exposures — are treated as separate disciplines rather than as part of immunity.
This is a structural omission, not a scientific one.
Why This Matters for Public Health and Public Understanding
When the health system teaches only the internal immune system as “immunity,” it shapes how clinicians think about:
This narrow framing influences how clinicians interpret many aspects of health, including how the body responds to infections and how immune responses are supported.
Public‑health agencies worldwide emphasise that vaccines work by stimulating the internal immune system — the third layer — which is accurate within that framework.
But the broader physiological context (digestive and barrier defences) is not part of standard medical training.
But the broader physiological context (digestive and barrier defences) is not part of standard medical training.
It asks a governance question:
Why is the health system not teaching clinicians the full layered architecture of human immunity that scientific literature already describes?
This is a question about training, completeness, and legal obligations — not about clinical recommendations.
The Legal Contradiction at the Heart of This OIA
If Te Whatu Ora confirms that clinicians are not trained in:
then the system must also explain how clinicians can meet:
Because you cannot disclose what you were never taught.
You cannot prevent harm you were never trained to recognise.
You cannot meet standards built on knowledge you were never given.
You cannot prevent harm you were never trained to recognise.
You cannot meet standards built on knowledge you were never given.
This is the core issue.
Why This OIA Matters for Every New Zealander
This is not about politics.
It is not about ideology.
It is not about telling people what to do with their health.
It is not about ideology.
It is not about telling people what to do with their health.
It is about transparency.
It is about whether the health system is teaching clinicians the full physiological picture that scientific literature already describes.
It is about whether the public is receiving care that meets the legal standards set by MCNZ and the HDC.
And it is about whether the system is willing to confront a gap that has existed for decades.
