Letter to MP Joseph Mooney – fracking and Underground Coal Gasification
Dear Mr Mooney,
Serious concerns have arisen regarding references to subsurface energy extraction activities, including fracking and Underground Coal Gasification (UCG), in proximity to residential and agricultural land.
These concerns are not speculative. They arise from the absence of clear, publicly available information addressing:
– The precise nature of the activity proposed;
– The statutory authority relied upon;
– The environmental risk assessments undertaken;
– The independent expertise consulted; and
– The allocation of liability in the event of environmental harm.
Given the known risk profiles associated with such activities, particularly UCG, it is necessary to establish whether:
1. Any approvals have been granted or are under consideration;
2. Full risk modelling has been conducted and independently reviewed;
3. A defined liability framework is in place, supported by enforceable financial assurance.
This is a matter of procedural integrity and public safety.
Accordingly, please confirm:
– Whether you have been briefed on any such proposals;
– What information you have been provided regarding associated risks;
– What steps are being taken to ensure full transparency and accountability.
A response addressing these matters is expected.
Yours sincerely,
Tracy Lynch
