FORMAL REQUEST FOR VERIFICATION CLARIFICATION

Dear Complaints Committee,

 

I write regarding the One News article broadcast on 6 September 2023 titled “Lead, mercury fears fuel seaweed tonic warning.”

As the named subject of that broadcast, and in light of ongoing legal proceedings connected to the matters reported, I formally seek clarification regarding the editorial verification process undertaken prior to publication.

 

Specifically, please confirm:

1. Whether Simon Stott was contacted prior to publication and afforded an opportunity to respond.

2. What independent verification, if any, was undertaken by TVNZ in relation to:

  (a) Laboratory testing data;

  (b) Product sampling methodology;

  (c) Toxicology interpretation.

3. Whether TVNZ relied solely upon information provided by MPI or New Zealand Food Safety.

4. Whether any independent scientific or toxicology expert was consulted.

5. Whether any internal editorial risk assessment was conducted regarding potential reputational harm.

 

This request is made for the purpose of assessing compliance with the Accuracy and Fairness standards under the Broadcasting Act 1989.

Given the seriousness of the allegations broadcast and their ongoing consequences, I request a written response within 10 working days.
